Oc gao of Phu Da

Nhãn:

The beginning of the fifth lunar month is the season of oc gao (a small edible snail) in Phu Da in Cho Lach District of Ben Tre Province. Visitors who row to an island might witness the lively scene of people searching for snails, for this special food has created many jobs for Ben Tre residents.

Locals classify Phu Da snails at Cho Lach District in Ben Tre Province.Alternatively, a visit to Ba Ngoi garden in Vinh Binh Commune, Cho Lach District will reveal how locals classify snails with a home-made machine or cut shipworms from the snail shells.
Typically there are about 20 workers cutting shipworms, however, around 50 are at work at peak times in the Double Five festival (the fifth day of the fifth lunar month), according to Nguyen Van Nho, technician of Phu Da snail cooperative.
Classifying snails pays VND250 for each kilogram. Shipworms are bought at VND500 per kilogram by the cooperative for duck food. The season of oc gao lasts until the seventh lunar month.
At Ba Ngoi garden, visitors may also enjoy oc gao boiled with citronella for just VND10,000 for a large serving. The snails here live in muddy soil and are smaller and fatter, and more delicious, than those m other places. Other foods to try are rice pancakes filled with mussels and bamboo sprouts for only VND8,000 each.
Crispy cake skin, greasy coconut milk and peanut-and-rice cake flour, sweet mussels and bamboo sprouts used with many kinds of garden vegetable are all well-known dishes of southern Vietnam.

Axe to fall on Paradise Resort project in Vung Tau

Nhãn:

The project to build a luxury resort named Paradise in the southern coast city of Vung Tau will go off the list of entertainment areas there as the provincial government has just decided to put the foot-dragging property project to an end.
Le Kim Huong, director of the Department of Planning and Investment of Baria-Vung Tau Province, told the Daily on Monday that her agency was making a formal notice to the investor to this effect.
"After receiving approval from the provincial government last week, my department is drawing up a detailed notice to officially announce the decision" to revoke the license for Vung Tau-Paradise join venture, owner of the long-delayed project, she said.
"The province has made the decision after many times extending deadlines to the company to develop the project," she said, adding the notice will be issued upon approval from the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).
In 1991, Vung Tau-Paradise, a joint venture between Vung Tau International Tourism Company and Taiwan's Paradise Development and Investment, received a 25-year license to develop the Paradise resort. The company had planned to spend US$97 million on the 220-hectare resort on Thuy Van beach of Vung Tau City.
The company has also planned to build many facilities such as a golf source, sea sport and entertainment areas, a hotel of 500 rooms and others.
However, after 17 years since receiving the license, the company has just built some preliminary facilities including the golf course, the sea sport area, and a hotel of 38 rooms, while other key components, especially a big hotel section of 500 rooms and an entertainment park still remained on paper.
Huong said the delay was due to financial difficulties on the part of the investor.
"The cash-strapped company could not afford the costly project. It has many times asked for extended deadlines to seek financially-capable partners for developing other remaining sections but the investors still failed new deadlines," Huong said.
The company had also asked the province to extend the licensed operational term to 50 years in line with Vietnam's new investment law, as the previous law dictated a period of 25 years only.
Huong said that the provincial government had many times discussed the project, especially since last year up till now. Together with new deadlines, the province had also given a leeway to the investor, telling it that Baria-Vung Tau could ask the MPI to extend the operational term to 50 years if the company proposes a suitable plan for the project development.
One of the new choices was that the joint venture could transfer the project to other strong investors to continue developing other remaining sessions, but such suggestions did not work, and therefore it is now revoked, she said.
Huong added that the MPI had agreed in principle to revoking the license.
She said that as the projects land would be taken back, the two sides of the joint venture should begin talk about the facilities on the land.

DivaCup challenge

Nhãn:

Male readers: unless you are truly curious, or want to inform your wife or girlfriend or both, you can skip this post.Ladies. It's been brought to my attention the fabulous environmental nature of the DivaCup. It has quite a few benefits over the usual assortment of tampons and pads used during one's period. The classics are, quite noticeably, not too environmentally friendly. Sure there are some eco-alternatives (no plastic, 100% unbleached cotton, etc.) but in the end you are still flushing or throwing something into the landfill.Enter the DivaCup. I've seen mention of it on other people's blogs lately but just skipped right on over it. Why? Because, frankly, they kind of freaked me out. I mean, who wants to drag out some cup filled thang to hand wash? That said, since I'm a Crunchy Chicken and all, I went to the website and read a little bit more about it and have changed my impression about it, in spite of the initial reaction. So, without going into incredible details on how it works and how to use it and why (I'll defer you to visit their website for that), I challenge you. Yes, YOU. (Unless you are a guy and are still reading this far.) Let's see if we can wean ourselves off of disposible feminine products for three months. Are you up for it? If so, add yerself to the comments with "Sign me cUp" or something like it.Raffle! To add to the excitement (as if feminine products weren't exciting enough!) I'm holding a raffle to all those who sign up for the challenge. In order to help defray the cost of the cup, I'll pick a name from a hat and the winner shall receive a free DivaCup (see comments for more details). The drawing will be held next Monday, April 23rd.Prizes!Yes, there's more! For those challenged chickens who make it through the three month trial, there will be another drawing for some fun prizes. I'll announce these prizes next week after the DivaCup raffle. And what if nobody signs up for the challenge? Well, then, I guess I get my own free damn cup. And super cool prizes.
